MOUNT UNION MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH
Church History
Mount Union Missionary Baptist Church traces its roots back to 1892, when J. S. Thacker, the son of a Baptist minister from Ohio, settled in the community and helped organize what would become the church. In those earliest days, the congregation met in a local one-room schoolhouse and was served by a circuit preacher from Huntington. Mr. Thacker was given the responsibility of starting a Sunday school at the school, and that effort became the beginning of Mount Union Missionary Baptist Church.
The church’s first pastor was Rev. John Greer of Crown City, Ohio, who served the young congregation for approximately eight to ten years. As the church grew, an important opportunity arose when the local one-room schoolhouse was sold for $50. Around that same time, Hugh and Mary Howard generously donated the land that remains the church property today. The original sanctuary of Mount Union is, in fact, that very one-room schoolhouse, making it a meaningful and historic part of the church’s identity.
Over the years, the congregation continued to grow and invest in its ministry. In the late 1940s, four Sunday school rooms and a choir loft were added to the original structure. These additions were later formally dedicated in 1954, reflecting both the church’s steady growth and its commitment to worship, Bible study, and Christian fellowship.
Today, Mount Union Missionary Baptist Church stands as a testimony to the faith, perseverance, and generosity of those early members whose vision and labor established a lasting place of worship in the community.
